SINNERS
Sinners Set
As the play opens an immense silk curtain hangs from the top to the bottom of the stage, it is hung right around a circular runner which is almost the width and depth of the stage. Although it is white it is sometimes lit red – as at the opening, or blue – to signify the marquee. At times it is used as a screen onto which images of the choir are projected. The curtain is opened and closed manually between scenes by a member of the stage crew.
When it is first opened it reveals a slightly raised, large, square wooden platform. This is the interior of the Simpson family home. It is a fairly modern open plan living room and kitchen. The living area is on the left, the kitchen on the right. There is a cream settee and a standing lamp. In the kitchen there are under counter painted cabinets, a wooden worktop and Belfast-style sink. In front of this there is a wooden table and chairs.
At first, the settee is lying on its back with the cushions off and the remains of a party involving a lot of alcohol clutters the space.
When the curtain is closed the area in front of it becomes the Marquee and a small rectangular table is placed on the left.
The garden is created by unfurling a 4ft wide roll of artificial grass across the front of the stage. On this is placed a modern wooden sun lounger, small table and plants.
A large cross hangs down centre over a table draped in velvet with 2 adjacent rows of wooden chairs facing it to create the Marquee in Act 2.
