Programme notes – School of Rock
School of Rock is based on the hit movie starring Jack Black. This new musical follows Dewey Finn, a failed, wannabe rock star who decides to earn a few extra bucks by posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. School of Rock - The Musical features new music written by Andrew Lloyd Webber with lyrics by Glenn Slater and a book by Julian Fellowes.
Character and Costume
Jake Sharp plays Dewey Finn. Dewey is out of shape with messy brown hair and a scruffy beard. When playing with No Vacancy he wears a black tee shirt with a graphic of fried eggs on it. At the school he wears blue jeans and trainers, a shirt with the collar open and a loose tie, and a knitted vest top. When performing with School of Rock he wears a maroon school blazer, a white shirt and school tie, baggy school check shorts and long maroon socks.
Head mistress Rosalie Mullins is played by Rebecca Lock. She is slim with short, red hair and glasses. Rosalie wears a fitted blue skirt suit.
Miss Sheinkopf is a prim older lady, and the other teachers are neatly dressed with suits and ties.
Ned Schneebly is played by Matthew Rowland. He is skinny with glasses and wears blue jeans and a cardigan. Later he transforms into a punk rocker with ripped jeans and a ripped tee shirt, black eye make-up, biker boots and tattoos.
Patty is a young attractive blonde.
The school kids, who become School of Rock, are played by an ensemble team of 12 different children who perform live each night. They are all between ten and thirteen years old. School uniform for the boys is a maroon and white school tie, a white shirt, a maroon jumper or cardigan and grey trousers. The girls’ uniform is a maroon and white check pinafore over a white shirt and a school tie, with long maroon socks. When performing as School of Rock they still wear uniform, but some have put badges on their blazers, tied their ties round their heads and made themselves look more rock and roll.
No Vacancy: Theo – the lead singer - is described as having hair like a Nordic god and a body to match. He performs with his shirt open and his fit abs on display. The other two members of the band are equally handsome. In No Vacancy, Dewey is the odd man out.
Set
The apartment where Dewey rents a room with Ned and Patty, has a grey sofa and an open cabinet with a neat selection of pictures and ornaments.
Dewey’s bedroom is messy with an unmade bed. The walls are plastered in posters and CD racks, the windows are covered with a stars and stripes flag.
Horace Green Prep School has tall stained glass windows, a corridor lined with mahogany and decorated with sporting plaques, certificates, class photographs and pictures of old head masters and notable pupils.
The classroom at Horace Green where Dewey teaches has one large wooden teachers desk and twelve smaller school desks for the pupils. There is a roller chalk board that can be pulled down to reveal different faces, maps, posters and a reading stars reward board for the top pupils.
The Roadhouse Bar is grungy and dirty, with broken windows and graffiti on the walls. There are neon beer signs on the walls and a juke box in the corner on the right-hand side.
The Palace Theatre, where the Battle of the Bands is held, has tall gantries with lots of lights pointing at the stage and the performers. The lights can rotate and flash blue and green and red and there are plumes of stage smoke. Dropped down when the kids are on stage is a huge banner with the words School of Rock in red capital letters.
