The Gingerbread Mix Up
The walls on either side of the stage in front of you are covered in curtains from ceiling to floor. Patterned on the curtains are lots of very tall trees, all close together, the way they are in a forest. In the centre of the stage is a square platform representing the floor of a small living room. At a right angle to the floor rises the chimney breast which supports a small white fireplace. An easy chair at each side of the fireplace and a standard lamp make this tiny room look cosy. Primrose and her Mum and Dad live here. When the living room is wheeled off stage lights emphasise the tree curtains which now form the forest. Deep in the forest is a wooden garage covered with climbing plants. To the right of the garage is a dwelling which at various times is the gingerbread cottage and the witch's kitchen.
The Gingerbread cottage has a large sloping roof with bales of hay covering it. The frames of the two windows are laced with lollipops and pink and white candy sticks. The gingerbread bricks have gingerbread men biscuits stuck to them and little sweetie hearts are dotted everywhere on the walls. It is a pretty cottage with a bright red door.
The Cast
All of the characters in the play are performed by three people, a man, a woman, and a young girl. They are, Kyron Burke, Christina Nelson, and Rosie Barry.
THE COSTUMES/
Mammy is middle aged with curly ginger hair. She is small and plump and wears a white dress under a blue apron. Her sunglasses are bright blue, very big, with lens the shape of a fifty pence piece. Her fluffy slippers are a striking torquoise colour. Later we see her with a blue and white plastic handbag and plastic suitcase.
Daddy has grey hair in a side shade. His hair covers his ears. Over a blue and white open necked shirt he sports a grey woollen buttoned up cardigan. His corduroy trousers are brown and are teamed with white socks and grey slippers.
Their daughter Primrose is dressed in a red pinafore with long white sleeves and white pockets. Her boots are black and her tights are red.
Pardon, the witch's assistant, is a cat. His cat suit consists of black leggings with a black tail, white knee socks and black shoes. Lumps of grey are stuck onto the shoulders, the upper arms and down the sides of the legs. His spiky hair is grey and black. His moustache is also spiky and stretches from his upper lip to his ear at each side of his face.
The Witch's costume makes her look like a huge prehistoric animal. At least the costume gave that impression when she clambered from the floor onto the front of the stage wearing a massive black cloak covered in black shiny leaves. The black pointy hat, however showed she was the witch. When she removes her cloak a circular piece of metal sewn into the hem of her calf length dress makes it sit out like an umbrella. The dress itself is a patchwork of coloured images, such as the head of a newborn baby, a bear and several forest animals as well as lots of huge flowers. The toes of her black pumps curl and point upwards. She wears an outsize bonnet tied under her chin with a green ribbon. The hat too is bedecked with outsize flowers.
Minor characters appear in costume on the stage and these characters will be described as they appear.
