HANSEL AND GRETEL
THE SET
At the start of the show the outside arch is visible with shapes of stars and rectangles outlined on it. During the show the large rectangle on the right upright of the arch becomes a window to the control room of the Emerald Square Shopping Centre from which the security guard appears and makes his announcements. Various other rectangles have phtographs projected on to them during the show. A bright pink curtain is drawn across the stage. The words Hansel and Gretel are printed on it in white letters embellished with sparkles.
When the curtain is drawn back the interior of Hansel and Gretel’s sparsely furnished living room is revealed, with a piano to the the right, decorated with a string of Christmas cards, a small rug in the centre, and behind it an artificial Christmas Tree which has seen better days. In front of the Christmas tree is a large tool box and to the left of it a coat-stand with various coats, hats and scarves hanging on it.
As the show progresses the living room furniture is removed and the Emerald Square Shopping Centre is revealed. It’s enclosed by two further arches, each decorated with stars. The uprights of these arches can be lit from behind, and they have diagonal cross pieces, so they appear almost like stained glass, with green, red or purple lights glowing through them. The horizontal beams of the two inner arches are both decorated with big sparkling stars, one in the middle and one at each corner so that at times huge stars appear to be suspended in a 3 dimensional sky. There are two levels to the set. On the lower level, quite far back, there is a rack of shoes and centre back is a sliding door through which shadows of people and animals can be glimpsed. On the upper level a set of book shelves and a jewellery display appear. There is also a silvery white Christmas tree with lights, centre back. On the lower level the space leaves room for various shops to be represented, so a clothes rail with fancy dress costumes appears at the right front and Santa’s Grotto, a bench with parcels packed beneath it, at the left front. Later a mobile Candy Cabin is wheeled in by the Miss Isobel Candy. It is decorated in pink and white candy stripes with a pink and white decorative awning and has two shelves, full of jars of sweets in bright colours.
In the witch’s lair, centre back, is a man-sized cage. There is a unit of shelves on the left front of the stage with various potions and packets on it. On the right front of the stage is a huge piece of machinery, like two boxes joined together, with a very large corrugated pipe emerging from it like the vent for a tumble dryer, from which smoke emerges at one point.
