The front arch is painted red with white stars, surrounded by red, blue and yellow lights. At the top of the arch the design resembles a big curled moustache like we might have seen on a circus master or performer in times gone by.
The curtain rises to reveal the interior of a circus big top, with a smaller sign declaring “the greatest show on earth” on the back of the stage. Underneath this are heavy red velvet curtains with a gold brocade trim, more lights surround these curtains.
There are 4 large screens at each side of the stage, painted on each of these is a small cannon with a yellow and blue wheel. The bottom quarter of each flat is painted with diagonal red, white and blue stripes. The top three quarters are painted yellow edged with a red and blue zigzag. Two low semi-circular benches edged with lights on a zigzag pattern create the impression of the big ring of a circus.
For the circus routines various platforms, stands and poles are placed on the stage in order for the acts to perform their routines.
A curtain is painted with the outside of the three bears cottage Their 2 storied cottage is in the tudor style with wooden exposed beams and casement windows with lattice effect. The front door and window shutters are cerise pink, and flowers and plants grow up the walls. The curtain rises to reveal the interior of the cottage. There is a wooden staircase and balustrade. Upstairs there are 3 small beds under a low roof. Downstairs there is a fireplace in one room and a desk and stool in the other. The dancers bring inkitchen table and chairs. The table is round and covered in a gingham table cloth. The 4 chairs are mismatched and different colours, two are carver chairs and one has a pink velvet, fringed cushioned seat pad. There are 3 different coloured saucepans and a sugar bowl on the table.
Countess Von Vinklebottom’s house is lit in an eerie and nasty green. There is a sign in a goosebumps style font which says Von Vinklebottom’s Circus. A lighting effect creates jagged shapes like broken glass on the floor. There is a wheeled cage either side surrounded by an image of a crazed clown with a maniacal toothy grin and red lights for his eyes. A giant puppet gorilla in chains slowly nods and moves his head from side to side. Another wheeled cage is draped with chains.
The forest is created by a backdrop painted with trees, toadstools, flowers, rocks and bushes with a pink sky.
McFetty’s circus is the same as Von Vinklebottom’s but has a few additions - 4 15ft tall giraffe puppets stand at the sides moving their heads in time to the music. In lights, at the back, are the words - world famous, thrilling, astounding mysteries, dazzling, big top, high wire, roll up roll up and sensational!
We hope you enjoy the show!
