Programme Notes for God of Carnage
The Set:
A dome of 11 curved wooden slats springing from a slatted ring suspended from the ceiling encloses the acting area. It gives a similar effect to a cage, a goldfish bowl or a glass house. Within the dome is grouped a contemporary sofa, centre stage, flanked by an armchair on either side. Both sofa and chairs sport matching crimson cushions with tassels. In front of the sofa is a low coffee table. The coffee table is heaped with art books and there are more on the shelf beneath and on the floor beneath that. A large vase of crimson tulips is displayed on the coffee table. Outside the group to the left of the sofa is a rather old-fashioned sideboard with a pull down flap. The sideboard also has a large vase of crimson tulips on its surface and a number of books stand upright beside the vase. Beyond the slats of the acting space black curtains conceal the back stage area and the actors enter and exit through this blackness.
The Cast:
The cast consists of two sets of married couples. Michel is married to Veronique and Alain is married to Annette.
Michel, played by Dan Gordon, is a fairly short and stocky, rather overweight figure, with grey wavy hair, a square, care-worn face, wrinkled and ageing. He is in his late fifties. He wears a sports coat over a white shirt with a t shirt showing underneath its open neck. He wears black jeans and brown shoes.
His wife Veronique is as tall as he. She has auburn, mid-length, wavy hair which frames her face, softening her features. She has large expressive eyes, a wide mouth and well proportioned nose and is probably in her late forties or early fifties. Her figure is well-maintained, and she wears a maroon and silver dress, which clings to her, a silver necklace and black tights with high heeled black shoes. Ali White takes the role of Annette.
Alain is tall and slim with dark hair, tinged with silver. He wears a dark grey business suit, a white shirt, blue tie and black shoes. He carries a beige raincoat and a black scarf. He wears an austere expression and rarely smiles. This part is played by Sean Sloan.
Annette, his wife, is slim. Her dark, straight hair is caught up in an elegant bun on top of her head. She has regular features, with large expressive eyes and high cheekbones and her face is carefully made up with the eyes outlined and red lipstick on her cupid’s bow mouth. She wears black, slim-line trousers and a loose beige silk top. She wears a silver necklace and silver stud earrings and her outfit is completed with elegant, high-heeled black pumps. She carries a pale cream raincoat. Kathy Kiera Clarke takes the role of Annette.
