Nutcracker: The Set
The ballet opens in the famous Mtatsminda Park in Tblisi. There is an open space for playing and skating in front of many of the town’s buildings. The ones at the front are fully visible, many with domes on their roofs and behind them are the peaked roofs of other buildings. All of the buildings are highlighted in white and centre stage is a schematic Christmas Tree, just the shape of one, picked out with lights.
The set next changes to the Dadiani’s sitting room. Behind everything is an enormous window which reveals a midnight blue sky between brown window frames. One pf the panes of glass is illuminated with flashing white Christmas lights from time to time. In the centre of the stage is an enormous Christmas tree, decorated with lights and ornaments. A golden star shines down from its pinnacle. To right and left of the stage are room divider screens, outlined in grey and grey twisted pillars which reach tall to the ceiling. One of the right-hand screens has a clock mounted on it and the other, also on the right has a picture. Later a folding screen is brought on and opened out at the base of the Christmas tree obscuring its bottom branches.
In Drosselmeyer Park large fir trees bedecked with snow cluster around houses whose ridged roofs are topped with snow. The small house on the left is cosy, shining an orange light from its windows. In the centre of the park stands an enormous, rounded snowman, complete with hats, scarf and carrot nose.
Barbare then journeys through the land of snow where innumerable clustered houses with lighted windows form the backdrop, while to right and left two enormous snow- covered fir trees stand tall. There are large golden stars shining in the sky.
The backdrop for the land of sweets is composed of fairy tale building in fabulous curving shapes in paste shades of green, purple, pink and brown. They have rounded sides and domes for roofs and to the right at ground level a small open pavilion is depicted. Dead centre is an enormous Christmas Tree covered in sweets, ice creams, and cup cakes. There’s a smiling sun with shining rays atop the tree and dark clouds drift in the sky above. A couple of bees hover over the scene and on either side are low lying benches for the corps de ballet to sit on from time to time.
