Introductory Notes for Jack Frost
The Set
An enormous transparent globe, like a huge balloon, slightly frosted, sits in the centre of the stage. In front of it there is a street of tiny houses with shining bright lights. To the left and right of it stand sharp pyramids, some taller than a man, some less tall. There are three tall ones on each side of the stage and five small ones. They could be icicles. Behind the enormous globe three smaller globes hang at different heights from the ceiling while other smaller globes, which are lights sit further back on the stage. Four metal struts stand, two on each side of the stage, crisscrossed with thinner metal bars. They are used to climb on at one point and they are often lit, during the action. Above everything a circle of metal hangs at a slant, suspended from the ceiling above the central globe.
The Characters and their Costumes
King Alban, played by Richard Croxford and Queen Thaloria, played by Colette Lennon, appear on film in the beautiful globe which hangs over the set.
Jack Frost wears black tight-fitting leggings with a shiny blue and grey jacket and a white cap. Under the cap he has a shock of white hair. His shoes are black. He is played by Conor Quinn.
In the opening scene other members of the cast are dressed all in white with white furry hats and white fur coats decorated with sparkles on the hats, the coat lapels and their backs. Under their coats they wear white tops and trousers with white shoes on their feet.
Neve, played by Eimear Fearon wears, under her white coat, white tight fitting trousers with a black belt at the waist and a black purse attached to it. She has black ankle length boots on her feet. Her white hat covers a mop of tangled white hair.
Hoot is a large puppet of an owl. He is carried in by Mark Dugdale who speaks for him, although Hoot’s mouth moves. Hoot is fluffy. His white feathers have black tips to his wings and on his front. He has a large orange beak and his huge blue eyes are surrounded by round spectacles. The man wears a white satin waistcoat and a shirt with feathered sleeves, with his white trousers.
The Snowman is called Jon and is played by Darren Franklin. At first, we only see his head which emerges from a large rounded basket with a lid which comes off. He has a carrot for a nose and wears a black top hat with sparkles. Later when he leaves the basket he wears a black woolly hat and a red scarf with sparkles on his white trousers.
Krampus and Cailleach are the spirits of the old magic.
Krampus played by Jack Watson, wears black trousers and a brown jacket over with two horns on his head.
Cailleach has a long black dress with sparkles on the back and she has a mass of tangled curly light brown hair under a black headdress. She carries a staff. This part is taken by Rosie Barry.
St. Nicholas is an elderly man, tall and thin with white hair and a beard. He wears a red cardigan over black trousers. In Act 2 he wears green trousers and a brown jacket under a red cloak. This part is taken by Sean Kearns.
In the second act some tree creatures appear. They are bare trunks of thin trees, with bare branches, some thin enough to be arms and fingers and they wave and shake like arms. The tallest of these tree creatures has glowing red eyes.
